Comparing cavalry models -Normans v. Strathclyde

A little while back I think I posted that I had chosen to use Wargames Factory (WF) Ancient German Cavalry model to stand-in as mounted Strathclyde Welsh for a new 6 point Saga faction. This meant buying 4 packs of WF horses each with 12 models (plus another model from somewhere for the Warlord!)

A word to the wise - make sure you are happy with the scales of the models involved before buying....

Not all 28mm cavalry is going to be the same size!

I was happy that I wanted my Strathclyde to have smaller more pony sized horses but if you are thinking of using them as "standard" sized horses, you may want to think again.

Always try and check out the models face to face especially when buying from different manufacturer ranges.

Here is another shot to give you that difference again.... and no, the Welsh Warrior is not in pain, the arm is an extra component I haven't completed yet!

Both manufacturers shown here have horses that are constructed from three parts (2 body plus head). The riders are basically similar, one body with shield arm to which you attach a head and a weapon arm. Both were straightforward to built and neither had much cleanup to do. The WF model has a larger built-in base, but you will almost certainly want to add another. The Norman Knight is based on a Renedra 50mm x 25mm plastic base (this one was cut from a 50mm x 50mm base as they seem to come mainly like this on their cavalry sprue).

size is not everything...

Please comment on the forum if you can offer any advice to other gamers on choosing suitable models or to share your horror stories of money spent on figures that just didn't fit with the rest!
